From Salus (health) the Romans coined a verb Salutare (to ask after someone's health, to ask how they were) which gave the English verb to salute, and this French noun Salut, meaning a greeting, and, used alone, "Greetings," "Cheers," or just "Hello," "Hi!"--.whether on meeting or on departure,
